IEC develops a museification project for the UNESCO World Heritage site – Kulan settlement

On April 20, 2026, students and faculty of the School of Architecture of the International Education Corporation (KazGASA) carried out an expedition to the Zhambyl region. The trip became an important stage in the development of a museification and revitalization project for the UNESCO World Heritage site – the Kulan settlement.

The project is being implemented at the request of the International Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation and is aimed at preserving, promoting, and reinterpreting the historical and cultural site in a modern context.

During the expedition, a working group consisting of UNESCO Chair faculty members and 1st–3rd year students visited the Kulan and Merke settlements. The participants conducted field research, studied the current condition of the sites, and collected the necessary data for developing design solutions.

The project is part of the educational process within the program “Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage” and provides students with practical experience in working with sites of global significance.

By the end of 2026, the UNESCO Chair plans to conduct further expeditions to the Almaty, Zhetysu, and Kyzylorda regions to study and preserve Kazakhstan’s historical and cultural heritage sites.

The implementation of such projects demonstrates IEC (KazGASA)’s practice-oriented approach to education and its contribution to the preservation of national and global cultural heritage.
