Expert Debate “Almaty: Past and Present” Held at IEC

On April 17, 2026, an expert discussion platform titled “Generational Debate: Almaty – Past and Present” was held at the International Educational Corporation (KazGASA). The event was organized by the Center for Public Development of Almaty with the support of IEC (KazGASA) as part of the project “Almaty – My Pride.”

The event brought together representatives from architecture, urban studies, environmental sciences, and IT to comprehensively reflect on Almaty’s historical development, its current image, and future prospects. Special attention was given to intergenerational continuity, sustainable urban development, and the promotion of values such as labor and civic responsibility.

The discussion was moderated by Dauyen Mukhamedzhanov, PhD doctoral student at IEC (KazGASA). Speakers included urban architect and director of “Zhаña Körinis” LLP Kuat Kuandykov, Doctor of Architecture, professor and honored architect of Kazakhstan Gulnara Abdrasilova, professor at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and Head of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development Tursynkul Bazarbayeva, as well as IT specialist and AI researcher Meirzhan Auelkhanuly.

During the discussion, participants examined the stages of Almaty’s historical development, its architectural identity, and issues related to preserving the city’s uniqueness. Experts also discussed current urban trends, the pace of metropolitan development, and key social, infrastructural, and environmental challenges.

A separate session was dedicated to the digitalization of the urban environment. Participants discussed the implementation of Smart City solutions, the impact of digital technologies on urban life, and the role of artificial intelligence in urban development and environmental problem-solving.

In the final part of the event, key directions for the future development of Almaty were outlined, including the balance between urbanization and environmental preservation, as well as the role of youth in building a sustainable and inclusive city.

An open meeting with IEC (KazGASA) students was also held, focusing on the professional responsibility of future architects and their contribution to society.

Following the debate, participants exchanged views and formulated shared approaches to the further development of Almaty’s urban environment.
