45 Years Since the Founding of KazGASA: A Journey That Began with One Man’s Dream

In 2025, the Kazakh Leading Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering (KazGASA) – now part of the International Educational Corporation (IEC) – celebrates the 45th anniversary of its founding. The Academy traces its history back to the establishment of the Alma-Ata Architectural and Civil Engineering Institute (AACEI) in 1980.

The founder and first rector of AASI, Serekpek Baibolov, was a visionary whose determination, energy, and belief in the importance of training Kazakhstan’s own architects, designers, and builders laid the foundation for architectural education in the country.

The creation of the institute in the late 1970s was an act of true courage. At that time, establishing a new higher educational institution in architecture and construction required not only professional expertise but also exceptional perseverance. Thanks to Baibolov’s resolve and dedication, and with the support of the republic’s leadership – particularly Dinmukhamed Kunayev – the idea of founding AACEI became a reality, despite the challenging political and economic circumstances of that period.

Serekpek Baibolov not only succeeded in opening the institute – he laid the foundation for generations of architects and engineers who now shape the face of modern Kazakhstan. Under his leadership, the construction of academic buildings, laboratories, dormitories, and staff housing was actively carried out.

The history of KazGASA is a story of vision, resilience, and dedication to education, reflecting the spirit of progress and belief in the country’s intellectual potential.

The name Serekpek Baibolov will forever remain in the history of the academy and in the hearts of its graduates – as the name of a man from whom an entire era of architectural education in Kazakhstan began.
